Safety on and around campus.
I am not sure of what you have heard from other students and friends of yours but let me assure you, the campus and nearby places are safer than you think they are. As long as you aren't the type of person who flashes around his smartphone/tablet in a dark alley or sits on the curb with his laptop late night, you're going to be just fine. Just don't get adventurous and walk by yourself during wee hours in places that you SHOULD avoid. If you do so, you may land yourself into trouble.
Most of the places are well lit. You can afford to walk down at get an icecream or a milkshake at 3 am. I do. My friends do. And then there are places where you can't do that. Don't do it there. Get your icecream and milkshakes before you go back home and enjoy them sitting indoors.
Frequently Asked Questions on Safety
1. I will be required to stay on campus till late. How do I get back home if I don't have a car?
Worry not. The shuttle service is pretty kickass. Multiple shuttles run from 6 am - 11:30ish pm on weekdays and limited service from 8 am - 10pm on weekends.
UC-NightRide is a free nighttime transportation service. It provides students, faculty and staff safe and reliable transportation to and from locations within a one mile radius of the UC campus. Hours: Sunday -Wednesday: 8 p.m. to midnight, Thursday- Saturday: 8 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Limited service is available: Sunday - Wednesday: midnight to 5 a.m. Saturday - Sunday: 2 - 5 a.m.
So, if you plan your departure from campus right, you'll never really have to go by yourself.
2. What are the safe areas and what are the areas that I should avoid?
I am not really an expert to comment on that as I've never lived on the other sides on the campus. (Map included on Housing page) All the places on and around the North Route are pretty safe. That's where most of the Indian students have lived over the past serveral years. Lately, due to non-availability of houses in this area, students have gone down to Queen City Condos, Forum Apts - which fall under both North and South-West shuttle routes respectively. These are safe as well. But like I said, my knowledge is limited to these places, but I can tell you that a lot local students live on the other side of the campus. They won't be there if it weren't safe.
3. What are some of the other precautionary measures I should take in terms of safety?
Travel in groups.
Don't headbang late at night. No, for real. Don't.
If you're approached by somebody for change, politely say no and keep walking.
If you're somebody who really wants to help, keep some spare change in your pocket. Don't pull out your wallet to get a $1 bill out.
4. What's the deal with break-ins?
Personally, I haven't heard about break-ins over the past 2.5 years. The only precaution that I was given when I started the house hunt was to not consider apartments in the basement. Most of the apartment building owned by rental agencies, like Uptown Properties, at Forum Apts, Queen City Condos, etc. have secured doors for the building itself. Meaning, you'll need a key to enter the building, let alone entering your house. So, don't worry a whole lot about break-ins. Most of the places are safe.
I guess that's pretty much all you need to know for now, you'll learn a whole lot by yourself as soon as you get here.
